CONFERENCES/FORUMS The 2nd International Festival-Forum Past and Future: Cultural Interaction in Music of East-European and Eurasian countries Odessa, Ukraine, May, 24-29, 2001
Average audience of performances was numbered about 200 persons. At a press conference held before the festival-forum, about 10 newspapers, 5 radio stations and 5 TV channels were present. There published reports in the electronic and printed mass media before, during and after the event. Reports in monthly Ukrainian, Armenian, Russian and international periodicals have to be published in the near future. According to the questioning and personal talks, all the participants have assessed the festival-forum as a great international event being very important for their professional career, and the organization as excellent. So did the public and journalists too. This 2nd great international forum dedicated to the memory of Yuriy Fortunatov (1911-1998), an eminent orchestrator, musicologist and professor of composition, has continued Fortunatov's tradition of creative communication on the new millenium eve. Many Fortunatov's pupils and followers as well as young musicians and composers came together. There were remarked the highest professional level of the participants, an extraordinary creative atmosphere of communication and exchange of experience, beautiful opportunities for starting artistic contacts and new projects. The participants stressed the (potential and partly actual) leadership of Ukraine in the process of cultural interaction between the post-communist countries as well as between these and other countries of the world. So was achieved the aim and goals of the project. All the participants expressed their wish to take part in possible continuation of the project. As they represented not only the Soros foundations' network but also the leading institutions and organizations in their countries (Almaty, Baku, Bishkek, Chisinau, Moscow, Vilnius, Warsaw, Yerevan music academies and creative associations), the project will let establish new cultural network contacts. There were no especial problems, except of changes of dates of arrival and departure of some participants due to their professional activity. The festival-foum will start the further activity. The participants of the festival-forum have formed the organizational committee for creating the independent International Yuriy Fortunatov Foundation aimed to publish his musical, musicological and paedogogical heritage, musical and musicological works by his pupils and followers, hold international festival and conferences, found Fortunatov prizes and grants etc. The participants will dedicate to Fortunatov's memory their new works. The performers which participated in the event will perform works by composers present at the festival. The International Forum of Festival Directors and Managers of New Music Organizations Uniting through Music Odessa, Ukraine, April, 10-16, 2001 The Forum aimed at fostering the development of the New Music in the Ukraine as well as its integration in the European and global cultural space. A conference and a concert series represented a special event, although in time it was connected with the big Festival "2 Days and 2 Nights of New Music". It took place in various halls and venues of Odessa (Actors House, Literaturó Museum, Greek Culture Centre, Hall of Odessa section of the Ukrainian Composers' Union, and Worldwide Odessites' Club). Approximately 40 leaders of Composers' and other organisations, ensembles und festivals for New Music, directors of the Music Information Centres and other organisations as well as free composers, performers and musicologists from many countries of Europe, America and Asia. The entrance to all actions was free of charge. The financial support originated first of all from the Foundation Pro Helvetia Ukraina as well as other national and international foundations and institutions. Two main topics were discussed: (1) organisation and holding the national and international festivals for New Music and (2) informational infrastructure of the contemporary music at regional and global level. The participants and guests of the conference had got the detailed information about the situation in Armenia, Azerbaidzhan, Germany, Greece, Great Britain, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Scandinavia countries, Ukraine, etc. Prof. Bernhard Wulff set the pitch by reviewing his unique experience of organising festivals in various countries of Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine), America (Uruguay) und Asia (Mongolia, Kyrghyzstan, Vietnam). He called the Mongolin festival "Roaring Hoofs" a "child" of the Festival "2 Days and 2 Nights" in Odessa and the forthcoming Festivals in Kyrghyzstan und Vietnam its "grand-children". The conference participants consented, that contemporary festivals, particularly for New Music structurally should not be conceived as primitive conventional concert series, but they must originate from some integral, if possible unique artistic concepts. We are now witnesses of the globalisation processes in the area of New Music, especially concerning its appearance and development in post-communist and some non-European countries. The support for such processes needs a developed and various international informational infrastructures. In addition to existing international networks, another new international both thematic and regional networks are to be created. Particularly, such regional networks have the perspectives, if they could unite developed and so-called transition countries, e.g. Black See, Balkan and Danube countries networks. The participants and guests of the Forum got the detailed information about the development of the MIC Odessa Ukraine, its new production, and the online-magazine www.musica-ukrainica.odessa.ua. A small festival with Ukrainian (including the chamber orchestra Kyiv Kamerata), Swiss, Greek and other musicians was the other important part of the Forum. The Forum has found a large interest of Ukrainian and international mass medias as well as the public. The average number of the public mounted to nearly 200-300. Representatives of mass medias, the public as well as the participants have highly assessed its organisation, holding and importance. The wishes were expressed about the regular holding of such conferences and events in the terms of the activity of the MIC Odessa Ukraine. Margarita Esipova In memory of Jurij Fortunatov Information about the 1st International festival-forum "Past and Future: Cultural interaction in the music of the East-European and Eurasian countries" which was held by the Association New Music and other NGOs in Odessa (Ukraine) from 20 to 25 January 2000 (author of the project and manager - Iouri Semenov). The forum included various actions - concerts, auditions, discussions, roundtables etc. with the participation of composers and musicologists, partly pupils of Jurij Fortunatov (1911-1998), and first-range performers from Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrghyzstan, Moldova, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine. The forum was supported by International Renaissance Foundation and Soros Institute Network. This beautifully organised event has showed that new independent countries of the former USSR as well as other ex-communist countries could well interact in the terms of the common cultural space and spiritual field, centered round such great personalities as the late Professor Fortunatov was and keeps to be.
